More Answers We Get in Lost

So there they are, two tribes, going to war. Or is that three? Maybe it’s all the election fever in the UK at the moment, but I couldn’t help thinking that Lost DVD was playing out its own version of a three-party system this week. We had the Man In Black voting to leave the island. Sawyer also voting to leave the island (but with a slightly different emphasis on who should be doing the leaving – it’s the immigration debate, in reverse). And then Charles Widmore, directing his campaign from afar and apparently changing direction mid-stream. Why has he backed out of his deal with Sawyer?

After spending time with Hugo, Richard and Desmond over the past few weeks, The Last Recruit was much more of an ensemble piece. To extend the chess metaphor that’s been running through Lost DVD, it felt like we were watching one of those endgames where pieces are dropping left, right and centre, jumping around the board in a final frenzy of sacrifice and bloodshed before the final checkmate. Or stalemate?

We got more answers. Jack quizzed Flocke about his ghostly apparitions – yes, it was him pretending to be Jack’s dad way back when. But just to get him to some water – hmm, that’s one vote for him then. Will Jack regret his leap of faith? Widmore’s about-face with Sawyer didn’t seem to be getting him any more votes with the floating (all right, sailing) voters. What’s changed? And what will Richard have to say about it all? Meanwhile, the happiest moment of the week (apart from seeing Jack and mini Jack doing some father-son bonding in matching outfits) was of course Jin and Sun, back together at last. And she can speak English again.
