This job is called differently in different countries of the world. In the US, it is called Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Patient Care Assistant (PCA), State Tested Nurse Aid (STNA) or Nursing Assistant-Registered (NA/R), while in the UK it is called Nursing Assistant (NA), Auxiliary Nurse (Aux-N), Patient Care Associate (PCA), Nursing Tech (NT), Healthcare Assistant (HCA), Healthcare Support Worker (HSW) or Clinical Support Worker (CSW). But reagrdless of the name, this job, despite the tasks of those who perform this role seem simple, is very important and requires high level of responsibility.
CNAs perform various tasks. If a patient is calling for help, that’s a CNA who has to answer it. Some patients are bedridden. If such a patient is not periodically repositioned, this may lead to the so called bedsores. This task is also performed by a CNA. She also has to calculate how much food and liquid do patients need. And if a patient cannot feed him/herself, a CNA is providing help to him/her. Dressing and transportation of patients, helping them in exersising, even cleaning of the hospital rooms – all these different jobs are also provided by CNAs.
So yes, this is difficult, and a CNA cannot sit and relax even for a minute. But all that is compensated by the generosity of this wonderful job, and of course, people who choose it always become employed during even very nasty crisis.
