MLM Genealogy Lists? Will They Damage Your Home Business?
It’s a shame but there are so many network marketers who pin their hopes of success in the industry on mlm genealogy lists
They get themselves all geared up to start calling all those 5,000 or whatever prospects and get ready to start living the dream, but then they begin to realise…. None of these people seem to be interested, and quite frankly are quite hostile to even being called by someone that they have never heard of before. Aside from that at least 50% of the phone numbers are dead or wrong anyway!
In case you’re wondering let’s look at what a genealogy list actually is
They are lists of people who were previously involved in a network marketing company, most likely a company that didn’t go anywhere and shut down. Sometimes when an MLM company goes out of business they will auction off their list of distributors (complete with full contact details). Obviously this list could get into the hands of almost anyone, legitimate or otherwise.
The people who buy these lists may sell on the lists or part of them to other ‘information harvesting’ companies, or they may choose to sell them on to other network marketers. No doubt the buyers will market to the list first themselves before selling on. There are loads of people selling such lists on the internet, you would only have to research it briefly online to see what I mean
One of the big problems with such lists is the legal implications; it totally goes against the data protection and non disclosure documents that every distributor signs on enrolment. No one signed on the dotted line to say, ‘yeah sure, you can sell my information to some random person if the company goes under’. Assuming your looking to build your business with any form on integrity and morals then you will probably stay away from these lists.
By the time you get the details of the potential ‘prospect’ their information has probably passed through several different unethical channels and besides, once you end up calling your prospect they haven’t got a clue who you are anyway, its a certainty that they would have never directly requested information from YOU. Because of how you got their information your actually on the wrong side of the law anyway by calling or mailing them. It’s not really the ideal prospect, certainly not what you would call a qualified prospect!
Aside from the reasons I’ve mentioned above there is another reason why I would not attempt to build my business from mlm genealogy leads, can you imagine the pain of sitting on the telephone for 8-10 hours a day? The only alternative is to direct mail which could be pricey, or maybe you can email and become a dreaded spammer. It’s also important to remember that it takes a fair bit of skill and patience to close leads on the phone, warm leads can be tough, just imagine what it would be like with angry, frustrated leads that have been contacted and spammed over and over again!
When all is said and done there’s no need really to mess around and waste your time and money with these lists, there are lots of other effective methods that you can use to generate leads for your business every day, especially using the internet. It’s not actually difficult to be bringing in thirty or more leads into your business on a daily basis using the internet. I recently did a training explaining the step by step process I use to do this in my business for free, and the benefit is that my prospects already know who I am before they receive information from me.
