LED emergency lights – the modern advance warning system

Emergency lights are everywhere, we see them on alarm systems in our places of work and we see them in our homes on our own alarm systems. However, we mainly see LED emergency lights on emergency vehicles.

Any emergency will have some kind of lights or warning in place. If you come upon a road traffic accident you will see lots of flashing LED emergency lights and possibly traffic calming measures. There will likely be police and fire vehicles not to mention an ambulance. All such vehicles need to have lighting to assist them do their job safely and with utmost speed. First responders need to get to places quickly and the only way to get road users attention is by the loud siren and the flashing bank of lights they have on top, inside and at various positions on the vehicles. Emergency lights save lives, pure and simple.

Wherever there is hazard or danger you will see emergency lights, regardless of where the incident or situation is there will be LED emergency lights in evidence. It’s not just road vehicles that will have such lights, there will be boats and motorcycles and even bicycles that could have some form of LED lighting which can be used in an emergency to get our attention. Flashing lights always signal danger or hazard and we really do need to pay attention when we see any on the road or highway. Never ignore any flashing lights, or do so at your peril, you could find yourself a victim of a secondary road traffic accident to the original one.

Sometimes we hear an emergency vehicle long before we see the lights that don’t mean the lights are ineffective, they just aren’t in our line of sight yet. In our cities the flashing lights are sometimes the last thing we see and often that is as we directly approach a scene. We do however hear sirens and they act as advance warning that emergency vehicles are in the near vicinity. LED emergency lights are very powerful and emit vast amounts of light in all weather and lighting conditions. The new generation III LED lighting is the most powerful you can currently get and they are bright.

Most states now have some form of ‘Move Over’ law, and these will vary from state to state, however, their main function is to get road users to let emergency vehicles pass or for us to pass a scene safely. The Move Over law was specifically designed to help keep emergency services personnel safe. Many drivers when approaching an accident scene are more interested in what’s going on up ahead when they see LED emergency lights, than looking out for the personnel on the roadside. Some states will give you a hefty and immediate fine if you fail to adhere to the law or pull over when passing an emergency.

The ‘move over’ law was brought in to protect personnel in attendance at road side emergencies. Sadly even this law will not protect all. Careless driving is a big problem on our roads with people often more interested in rubber necking the accident than being aware of the dangers around them. Whenever you see LED emergency lights on the road, please act accordingly and drive with extreme care and caution. We all have a part to play in road safety and part of that is protecting those that are serving us and our communities.
