Wacky ways of dealing with data loss
There are two ways of doing anything: normal and crazy. The term ‘data recovery’ shows more than a million results in Google. Chances are, 99.9999% of the articles will tell you the normal way of recovering data. Well, here’s the article that’s one in a million,
The top 3 wacky ways of recovering data:
1. Put it in the Freezer
Yes, that’s the Freezer used in refrigerators to form ice. Why should you put it there? Here’s why: Data loss often occurs due to internal malfunctions and if the disk is used for a bit longer, it gets heated almost as quickly as you can say ‘Crazy’. Putting your hard disk in the freezer will not only ensure that your drive cools down, it also gives you enough time to get a replacement drive in your computer and transfer all your data into the replacement drive, once the failed drive is cool enough. But, do remember that this is a one-time fix only; freezing the hard drive means you’re sacrificing the drive for the data. Choose wisely!
2. Drop the disk.
Yep, you read right. I said, ‘Drop it!’ Dropping the hard disk or introducing a bit of shock can cause the read/write to start functioning again after it has stopped, giving you enough time to back up the data. But remember that when I say ‘Drop It’ I don’t mean drop it from the roof to the pavement, I mean from about 8 inches, to a considerably hard surface. This technique again, renders your hard disk unusable after backup.
3. Hit it!
Please don’t start dancing! Hit it literally. Most of the times, the disk has trouble spinning. Rapping it gently on the sides could smoothen up the process by releasing the stuck head. This also works on the old disks that develop sticking problems after a period of usage. Be very careful about what you’re doing and how hard you’re hitting. Too soft can have no action and too hard means Bye Bye Data!
These were the top 3 wackiest ways to recover data, but if you really care about your hard disk, you should send it to a data recovery professional, rather than taking matters into your own hands, floor or freezer!
