Looking Ahead

It was one of those “exciting”, “stirring” and “defining” moments. But could it really be so long ago that London was chosen as the venue for the 2012 Olympic Games? Back then, 2012 seemed so far away yet now it’s coming up like Usain Bolt on the last leg of a relay. Events are taking place all over Britain – there’s football in Glasgow, Cardiff and points north, sailing down in Weymouth and Portland, rowing in Berkshire, almost within splashing distance of David Cameron’s old school, Eton, but the majority of the Games – including the opening and closing ceremonies – will be here in London.

The main action may be centred on the new Olympic Park in Stratford, but most of the International Olympic Committee are likely to find themselves in rather more comfortable surroundings a few miles to the west, in one of the luxurious Mayfair hotels. For anyone interested in visiting the capital during the Olympics, it would be advisable to book early. The Athletes’ Village has room for 17,000 athletes and officials, but guests at the luxurious hotels in Mayfair will have rather more room.

The Olympic Games will appeal to the patriotic, the inquisitive and those who want to be part of an historic event, as well as the true sporting enthusiast. People will come to London from all over the world and the streets will be packed with visitors. The Mayfair district will remain slightly apart from the general hubbub, however. Despite being geographically close to this sporting celebration, (hotels in Mayfair) have always offered an oasis of calm. The area is renowned for its smart elegance and while athletes are setting records elsewhere, the only rushing around in this most traditional of British areas will be the hotel staff eager to make their guests’ stay as memorable and relaxed as possible.
