Writting A Subject Line That Should Get Your Messages Read
When sending a mailing to your (potential) customers is important that the mail is actually opened. The mail may contain another interesting offer if the recipient did not open, you have nothing.
In the years that I am doing internet marketing I’ve done a lot of mailings. And in all those years I have also been heavily tested with different subject lines. In this article I give some clever subject lines and some that are against the proverbial edge …
General rules
To write a good subject are a number of “basic” rules:
* Personalize if possible. Use the name of the company or person is in the subject line.
* Make the subject line too long! Try to keep under 40-50 characters.
* Try to grab the reader. This may arouse his curiosity or by the one question.
* Every audience is different. Therefore carefully test and measure the subject line gives the best result. It is therefore important to speak the target language.
* Tap into current events. Current events have greater attention.
* VERY IMPORTANT: The subject line must relate to the content of the email! It works against you when you create expectations with a subject line and content of the mail does not meet these expectations.
Examples of “clever” headlines:
* Charles, are you ready for more visitors?
* Play [subject] Quiz!
* Help!
* We love a party!
* [Company Name] wishes you congratulations!
* Need help losing weight Charles? (No, fortunately not ;-))
* Can we help you with [subject] Charles?
At the edge (or just about):
* A new message for you.
* RE: I forgot to tell Charles … (RE: let it happen if it is a response to an email from the recipient)
* Your payment is (Gevaarlijk!)
* Here are your payment information (Gevaarlijk!)
Do you have nice, smart or dangerous subject lines? If you follow these rules it should work ok, good luck!
