Data Recovery DIY

Unless you own a business of some sort or have data of prime importance stored in your HDD, there isn’t much chance that you’d spend hundreds of dollars in data recovery. The common man would try to take it in his stride and try fixing it on his own if he can. If you really want to do it yourself, here’s how to go about it,
Figure out the cause.
The first and foremost job of any person attempting data recovery is to figure out why it was lost in the first place. Was it a virus? Corrupted files? Or was it plain simple hardware error? These are the questions you must learn to answer before even trying to fix your damaged HDD. In addition to that, you should also know the extent to which your files were damaged to be able to try and recover them.
Type of Data
Sometimes system files on the hard drive are rendered inaccessible. In such cases, data recovery can be attempted by following the recovery procedures which are prescribed by the OS. But for data stored in documents and databases, you’ll have to come up with your own procedures.
Relevance
Finally, before embarking on the long, painful journey of data recovery ask yourself if it’s really worth all the effort. If you worked on your project for 2 days and lost it, there isn’t any point in spending a week to recover it. You could simply spend 2 days more to make that project again!

Learning how data recovery works can prove very useful but only if you have free time on your hands.
