The hard drive is basically a mechanical instrument with a number of moving parts. One of them being the platter. Several platters exist in a single drive and are covered with magnetic materials. These platters are used to store your data with a mechanical read/write arm, or the head, moving across them to retrieve your data or to write new data. The arm, in turn, moves with the help of an actuator.
One of the most important things to know about hard drives is that the head hovers just millimeters above the platters so if it’s disturbed by the smallest of substances, you can kiss your data goodbye.
Now, moving on to how data loss occurs. In the case that you lose data due to hardware problems, what’s really happening is that either your platters aren’t spinning or the head is stuck. Both ways, there’s a high risk that you’ll be losing a considerable amount of data. So, if you figure there’s a problem with the hardware, switch it off and take it to a data recovery service ASAP!
When software related issues lead to your data being lost, there isn’t any need to panic because chances are that you’ll recover most of it if you don’t use your drive after you’ve lost the data. This is because the data that is deleted remains on the platters unless it’s overwritten by the head. Pressing delete makes the particular sector open for overwriting so if you don’t use the drive, data recovery professionals can recover the data loss easily.
