The Concept 2 Rowing Machine – Examining Its Special Features

Way back in the early 80s, the Concept 2 rowing machines were launched to the world. The company that manufactures the Concept 2 rowers has headquarters in Vermont where the winters are very cold with a great deal of snow. So it makes sense that designing a high quality rowing machine for use indoors would be a great idea. However, they purposely wanted to construct the very best rowing exercise equipment possible using intelligent design principles. As an actual user of their rowing machines, I can honestly say their machines perform well. So I’ll discuss a few more particulars in this review of Concept 2 rowing workout machines.

The Concept 2 company produces the Model D and E with the Model E rowing machine being costlier. The Model E is available just as you see it, but the Model D is available with a selection of performance monitor. Each machine generally comes with a performance monitor of which there are two types, the PM3 and PM4. The Model D is accompanied by a PM3, but you can change that to a PM4 at additional cost. The other pick, which is costlier, is the E rower with the PM4 monitoring device. The Model D has the cheapest pricetag of $900 and higher price with the better monitoring device.

What is very helpful during exercising is you can use the performance monitors to determine your pulse rate while working out. The way you can do that with the heart rate is with an additional unobtrusive gadget that you place across your chest area. This monitoring device is very low profile and made of rubber, and the strap that comes with it is like spandex and is easily adjustable. I can tell you from what I have experienced that you won’t notice it’s there while you are exercising. The data from the heart rate monitor is actually transmitted to the PM3 or PM4 for processing and display.

The Concept 2 design utlizes a flywheel assembly that you will use to produce the resistance and make you feel that you are rowing on water. The flywheel is encased in a plastic assembly so you won’t come into contact with it while you are rowing. You can set the amount of resistance with a small lever located on the flywheel housing. When you are rowing you will hear the seat go backward and forward, the chain movement and the whirringwhizzing of wind from the flywheel, and the noise level is very low. Since the flywheel is very similar to a fan, of course you can hear a gentle swirling sound. However, I can tell you after many years of use that the flywheel movement is not at all distracting. Overall, you could easily use a Concept 2 rower in the next room without rousing others.

Either performance monitor also gives you the ability you to track a variety of data about your rowing in real time. It is helpful from the standpoint of your progress to determine your total distance rowed, how long it took you to do it, or even how quickly you can do a stroke Your specific needs will help you figure out what you want to keep track of and what is not so crucial. This mainly based on whether you are rowing for general fitness, or if you row in competition and what level you take part in.
