How to wear your favourite maxi dresses this summer

Summer is the time to break out all things bright and beautiful, from dresses and shoes, to accessories and make up and to make hay while the sun shines! If you have a maxi dress that you absolutely love but you have worn it to death and you need to refresh the look for the summer, here are some great ways to do just that.

A maxi dress is one of those items of clothing that looks absolutely fantastic worn by itself, with no airs, graces or fancy accessories and one that you can feel completely confident in thanks to its fabulous flattering properties. An empire line maxi dress, i.e. one that is nipped in just under the bust, is perfect for those who are bottom heavy, pear-shaped or have a tummy you’d rather your clothes didn’t cling to as it draws the eye to the slimmest part of the body. Working on the same principle, if your waist is your slimmest part, or you are straight up and down and wish to create the illusion of curves, the best shape of maxi dress would be one that is nipped in at the waist, or one that you can wear a belt with.

So, you can wear a maxi dress by itself, plain and simple, for an effortlessly cool look, but there are plenty of other ways to make it more interesting if you want a change. Firstly, add a belt or a brooch – these simple accessories can change the whole look and feel of maxi dresses and adding them in a contrasting colour or clashing pattern can do more than just change the shape, it can change your style too. Brooches are a better option than belts if you’ve gone for an empire line dress while belts work really well with waisted dresses. If your maxi dress is striped for example, choose a plain belt in a contrasting colour, or choose one in a clashing print such as animal print or floral, and apply the same principle to your brooch. Flowers are a great way to add a fun and summery element to an outfit but don’t go overboard on size or it’ll start to look a little bit tacky.

Alternatively, bring your maxi dress to life again with a cropped jacket, sequined sandals and bohemian jewellery and you’ll be ready for a festival, afternoon in the garden or to pop round to an impromptu barbeque. Whatever the occasion, maxi dresses can make you feel like a million dollars when worn simply or dressed up with the right shoes, jewellery, bag and other accessories.
