Sure, New York is the greatest city on the planet. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t see the rest of the world. And to do that, you’ll need a passport. A valid U.S. passport is required to enter and leave most foreign countries.
Only the U.S. Department of State has the authority to grant issue or verify United States passports. Sounds like a hassle, but don’t worry.
In Manhattan, getting and renewing passports can be painless if you know what you’re doing.
To get your first passport, you’ll have to go in person to one of 20 passport acceptance facilities in Manhattan. You’ll need documentation –
- Submit two Passport Photo. The identical photos must be 2 inches by 2 inches. The pictures must offer a full, frontal view of your face, from the top of your head through your shoulders. The photo must be taken with a plain white background. Many post offices, photo studios and mailbox locations take passport photos for a nominal fee.
- Complete Form DS-11: Application fir A U. S Passport
- Submit Form DS-11: Application for a U.S Passport in Person
- Submit Evidence of U. S Citizenship/U.S. passport, certified birth certificate or naturalization certificate
- Submit Evidence of Relationship
- Present Identification of Parent (s)/ Guardian(s)
- Submit a Photocopy of Each Parent/ Guardian ID Document to be presented
- Provide Parental Consent
- Pay the Applicable Fee
You’ll also have to apply in person if your expired passport is not in your possession, if your previous passport has expired and was issued more than 15 years ago, if your previous U.S. passport was issued when you were under 16 or if your currently valid passport has been lost or stolen. Normally, you will get your passport in about six weeks this way.
