Pac-Man v Ms Pac-Man – Who wins?
Most of the world has played Pac-Man at least once, but for those few of you who haven’t, I’ll quickly explain…
Pac-Man was first released in Japan in 1980 thanks to one very creative Namco employee named Toru Iwatani. At first it was named ‘Pakku-Man’ (meaning ‘eating by snapping’) which reflected the way the main character gobbles up ‘Pac-Dots’ (the little dots on the screen). It then became ‘Puck-Man’ before America released it and renamed it ‘Pac-Man’ to avoid any obscenities.
This video-game quickly became the most popular of all time, superseding any of it’s competitors almost immediately, appealing to both men and women, netting over $1 billion in quarters in it’s first year. It’s success was unprecedented, and despite several re-releases it seems people just couldn’t get enough of the original.
The very popular Ms Pac-Man was released in 1981 as a sequel, and although it offers a variation of mazes and several different features throughout game-play, and despite it’s undeniable financial success, it has failed to outsell Pac-Man. It seem Pac-Man really does have a very tight grip on the nostalgic heart-strings of the general population, with young and old alike declaring their love for the game that formed an entire maze-chase genre and spawned a generation of players hooked to video-games.
