The Cooking Show Craze

Never before has Australia seen such diversity and enthusiasm when it comes to food and eating. Gone are the ‘meat and three veg’ days of family dinners, because with so many cooking shows available on television, it’s now even easier for Australians to have a go at recreating their own culinary masterpiece.

Over the past sixty years, migrants from Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa have greatly influenced Australia’s current understanding of food, culture and cooking traditions. As Australians increasingly grew fond of such new and exotic cuisines, many cooking shows have sprung up to introduce the country to the history, culture and, of course, the preparation of their favourite foods.

Two of the most popular TV series include the following:

• Luke Nguyen’s Vietnam (series 1 and 2). Many will know Luke Nguyen as the owner and chef of Sydney Vietnamese restaurant, Red Lantern. He has also written two cookbooks, Secrets of the Red Lantern and Songs of Sapa, which are a collection of his favourite recipes as well as traditional recipes from around regional Vietnam, stunning photographs of his travels, and his memories growing up in a food-obsessed household.
Nguyen was also the presenter of Luke Nguyen’s Vietnam, a unique food show that saw him travel around Vietnam to immerse himself with the culture and food of his homeland. One part cultural lesson and another part cooking class, the TV series is informative as it is practical, even for beginner cooks.

• Italian Food Safari. Stemming from the ever-popular Food Safari series by journalist Maeve O’Meara, Italian Food Safari explores the huge influence Italian regional cooking has had on Australia since Italian migrants arrived post-War. Together with renowned chef Guy Grossi, O’Meara visits family feasts and Italian-owned produce farms in Australia to better understand how the Italian community have kept such longstanding food traditions alive. And as always, we also learn a thing or two about the cooking preparation of age-old recipes passed down from one generation to another.
