Care and Maintenance of Maintenance Free Lead Acid Battery
Lead acid battery is widely used in many different industries, such telecommunication, power systems, radio, and television systems, solar, UPS, electric vehicles, automobile, forklifts, emergency lights, etc. After great improvement, there are varieties of lead acid batteries all over the world, such as lead calcium batteries, lead antimony batteries, valve regulated lead acid batteries (VRLA), AGM absorbed glass mat battery, gel cell, SLI batteries (starting, lighting and ignition), and deep cycle batteries.
Some lead acid batteries are designed to be maintenance free, such batteries are sealed and the electrolyte can not be topped up. Batteries that are sealed and not vented should not receive equalization charges. Here is the maintenance free lead acid battery care and maintenance.
1. Batteries should not be left standing for any length of time, either charged or uncharged.
2. Batteries supplied dry have a shelf life of about 2 to 3 years.
3. Batteries should neither be over charged or discharged by more 60% of their capacity.
4. Batteries in a bank should all be the same make and the same model. Once a battery bank has been operating for more than a few weeks, new batteries should not be added.
5. The electrolyte should be topped up regularly with distilled water. Refer to the manufactures literature to find the recommended specific gravity.
6. Equalization charges should be used about once a month for batteries that are regularly cycled.
For the general lead acid battery, you always need to check and maintain them on a regular basis. Check the external and internal of batteries, and fill some distilled water if required. Keep the batteries clean and check the cables are tight. However, with a maintenance free lead acid battery, you don’t need to do these. Just follow the above points to care and maintain your battery. Simple maintenance may prolong the lifespan of the batteries. Why not do these easy things? Just do it by yourself! You will find it is a great job.
