Product Counterfeiting Hot Spots around the World

Counterfeits are a reality in this day and age. With newer and more sophisticated methods being employed by counterfeiters, no industry has been left unaffected. So be it designer goods, accessories, software, soaps, beverages, automobile parts, electronic goods, healthcare goods or even drugs, the fake or counterfeit versions of all such products are already found in the online market. The source of the ‘crime of the century,’ or counterfeiting as it has been infamously described by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, remains a dozen odd countries which include China, India, Turkey, Syria, UAE, Ukraine, Turkmenistan, Poland, Bulgaria, Paraguay, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

A recent report by the US government pointed to 33 notorious markets across the world that specializes in counterfeit products. Some of them include the Bahia Market (Guayaquil, Ecuador), China Small Commodities Market, (Yiwu, China), La Salada (Buenos Aires, Argentina), the so-called Ladies Market (Mongkok, Hong Kong), Nehru Place (New Delhi, India), Petrivka Market (Kyiv, Ukraine), Silk Market (Beijing, China), and Tepito (Mexico City, Mexico). The shutting down of counterfeit product manufactures is not easy simply because laws in different countries vary. For instance, in some countries manufacturing counterfeits may not be permitted by the law but selling counterfeits is seen as a perfectly legal activity. Some other countries are totally oblivious to counterfeiting because they do not view it as an economic crime. Therefore, because of the failure to deter counterfeiters in some cases, counterfeiting activities have only risen by leaps and bounds.
