Peter finished from Carlton University in Canada having a BA in Economics; later he went to grad school at Wheaton College in Illinois for his MA in Theology. He began his career in sales. He sold microcomputers and industrial calculators business to company in Canada. Even though he enjoyed sales, won awards and became among the top salespeople in his company, he wasn’t fulfilled. “I had my very first career crisis at the age of twenty-two!” Peter says, “One day it dawned on me that even if I became the greatest salesman in Canada, or for that matter within the entire world, it wouldn’t make me happy.”
He knew something had to alter. “I spent a brand new Year’s weekend in 1981 in a hotel room in Seattle, Washington, all by myself – setting some objectives for my life,” he says. “I had to know what the purpose of my life was. I needed more than a career. I needed a mission. So I went straight to the Top – I prayed about it!” Peter came away from that weekend with the strong sense that he was supposed to start his own seminar organization.
“It was crazy. It was irrational,” Peter recalls. “Everyone I knew who was in the seminar business was 50 or 60 years old. They had decades of company encounter and best-selling books. I was only twenty-two years old. Beyond some success in sales, I had no track record. Why would any person pay money to come and hear me speak?” Nevertheless, he felt strongly that this was what he was supposed to do, so he resigned his sales position and started his own company.
