Travel Details

After leaving school at the tender age of sixteen I was lucky enough to receive a Modern Apprenticeship position at a well know Travel Agency. I was very excited and desperate to have a career in the travel industry. I wanted to try everything, agency work, air hostess and working abroad as a travel courier. A travel courier was the same as today’s travel representatives. I don’t want to give away my age, as a lady should never reveal such delicate information but it was quite a number of years ago and things have changed dramatically since then. These days everything is low cost and no frills. It has taken the glamour out of travel.

During my stint as an air hostess for Monarch Airlines I was expected to meet their very high presentation standards. Our outfits consisted of hats, gloves and the uniforms were designed and manufactured by a high end British fashion house. These days however, standards have slipped.

Three weeks ago I went on holiday to the Greek island of Crete. This was not a cheap break away and had cost well over £5000 per person including flight, fabulous hotel and Ford Fiesta car hire. Consequently I was expecting a certain standard however once I boarded the flight, I was immediately disappointed. The crew were dressed in orange fleeces and trousers that didn’t even fit them. It was appalling. The girls wore barely any make up and they looked liked they had never had any training in grooming. Awful.

Maybe I am just a tad old fashioned but I miss the good old days. Each Air Hostess looked like a model from Vogue, real cutlery and glasses were used onboard and hot towels were provided to refresh oneself. I just hope it will change back one day soon, most things tend to go full circle so lets keep everything crossed.
