Creating impression in an interior
Usually it is a clutter rather than actual lack of space that premises suffer from. It is always advisable to design a décor in such a way where arrangement of furniture is done properly so as to create a feeling of spaciousness. Bright light, light and pastel colors, light and low furniture and well planned adequate storage will contribute to the feeling of spaciousness.
Now let us see which colors and textures to be used in the interior so as to create this feeling. How to use colors and understanding of the basic principle of color can help to solve many design problems and also help to hide design defects.
Sometimes one has a long and narrow room as the builder has constructed the same as per the building by-laws. Well now to make this room look square and spacious it is advisable to use lighter colors on longer wall and slight darker tint of the same color on the shorter wall, this will make the room look quite square as the walls light color appears to recede. Shinny color on the longer wall and texture on shorter one would also help to achieve the feeling of spaciousness. This means that painting walls and ceiling with glossy paint will add to a room’s apparent size whereas matt finish or texture paint will reduce it.
A low ceiling will look and feel higher if one paints it white and high ceiling can be made to look and feel lower by use of deep tone of wall color. A light and pale color wooden flooring or pale color carpet will make the room seem larger and more spacious.
Also flooring pattern can help to make one’s room look more spacious in the same way as clothes with vertical stripes/line make a person look slimmer and those with horizontal lines make him appear heavier, lines traveling along the length of the room on the floor or the walls will appear to extend the space and those lines that travel across will shorten but widen the area, so while selecting the size of the floor tiles or marble one can create feeling of spaciousness in the room.
Strong or dark color as a border around the room or skirting of darker material will enclose the space and will make it appear smaller, so if one wants a border in the flooring it is advisable to have a wider band on the shorted side and a narrower one on the long wall.
Well lighted house appears much bigger than a dark one, so it is always advisable to use evenly distributed light on the longer walls and the shorter walls can have less light, this will make the room look quite square as the narrower part will appear to recede.
