Eurovision Song Contest 2011
The 2011 Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Dusseldorf in Germany, following Germany’s win in 2010 thanks to Lena Meyer-Landrut’s song Satellite.
The competition will take the form of two semi finals, which will be held on May 10th and 12th and a Grand Final on Saturday May 14th. Forty-three countries are entered into the Eurovision Song Contest with the final being contested by twenty-five nations. The ‘Big Five’ of Germany, France, Spain, Italy and United Kingdom are pre-qualified for the final.
The final will be broadcast live by seventeen different countries around the world, including both Australia and the Faroe Islands, who are not eligible to enter the competition. In the UK it is the BBC that hold the broadcasting rights and both semi-finals will be screened live on BBC3 with the final shown on BBC1.
This year is the first since 1997 that Italy are entering the contest with Austria, Hungary and San Marino all back after absences. Montengero is the only country to have withdrawn from Eurovision 2011.
This year there are several acts which are already gaining both publicity and popularity. Lena returns to defend her Eurovision crown. She will be singing a new song “Taken by a Stranger” and is sure to have a great deal of home support. 1998 winner Dana International will also be back in 2011 and will sing “Ding Dong” for Israel.
The UK entry has sparked some controversy, with disbanded boyband Blue reforming to participate in the contest. The foursome, who had several UK number one singles, will sing “I Can” and they are one of the favourites to win the competition. Blue are, by far, the most established band to enter the Eurovision Song Contest this year.
Irish hopes will be pinned on reality TV stars Jedward, who first came to public attention during the 2009 series of the X Factor. The twins have been a huge hit in their homeland and will sing pop song “Lipstick” in Dusseldorf
France’s entry has also caused some controversy, with Amuary Vassili’s song “Sognu” dividing opinions around Europe. It is the bookmakers favourite to win Eurovision 2011 but has been criticised as it is sung in Corsican, as opposed to French.
