Police car lights – are they really just for police cars?
Lighting units may be described as police car lights, but are they just for such vehicles? The answer is of course not. Many light units would sit just as easily on a fire or medical vehicle.
What are the benefits of fitting police car lights? The main reason any lights are fitted to police cars is to enhance their visibility. A police car speeding down the street with lights flashing and siren blaring is extremely difficult to miss. Lights are arguably the most important thing on a police car to get the public’s attention. Often a police car will only deploy the use of lights when responding to a call that is not high priority. Flashing lights certainly are an attention grabber, and never more so than if you are being pulled over by an officer.
The police officers have an incredibly dangerous job and anything that can help keep them safe is a big plus. police car lights do play a big role in safety but just for the officers but the public as well. police car lights can be fitted anywhere on a vehicle, with many of the newer units being fitted inside. Long gone are the days when a single rotating strobe light was the only warning light a police car had. Lights provide advance warning of a police cars approach and they can warn that vehicles are stationary on the road ahead. If it is the case where you come across lights on vehicles at roadside you do need to adhere to any ‘move over’ law your state has.
A police vehicle that is highly visible when it’s stationary is a vehicle that is less likely to be caught up in a collision with other vehicles. Often at road side officers are at their most vulnerable as people don’t see them, there is at least 1 fatality every month of a first responder at roadside incidents. police car lights need to be bright enough to provide the hazard warning, but not so bright they act as a distraction. Having the right amount of Illumination at a roadside at night is about as crucial as lighting gets. All police cars will have some form of emergency lighting even if it is concealed or hidden.
Undercover police cars need several things. They need to be able to blend in with the ordinary street traffic. They also need some lighting to use when they are happy they are going in for a takedown, hidden lighting can be fitted all over a vehicle and wouldn’t be seen until the light was actually switched on. The main thing for any police car lights is they have to be incredibly versatile. You won’t get the same sets of lights on say an ambulance or rescue truck, so police car lights are fairly unique in some respects.
An ambulance would not require take down lights and probably wouldn’t need concealed lighting, but the fact of the matter is the police car lights can be utilized on any vehicle. The basic requirement for any emergency vehicle lighting is they have to be easy to operate and they have to come with a range of features such as a choice of flash patterns and colors. Regardless of the area of operation police cars need lighting to add to the markings and audible warnings they have. It’s very rare when you see a police car without any lighting at all.
