Police car sirens – Getting your attention and keeping you informed.

Police cars need many things, lighting of some kind and of course the siren. You would think a siren is just a siren but no, there are a few different kinds of police car sirens.

We hear sirens all of the time, day and night, there seems to be no escaping them. Of course, we hear them a lot as there are fire, ambulance and police car sirens all over our cities and towns. You probably have never stopped to think of how important the sirens are on emergency vehicles, I know I haven’t. Siren is a word with a few different meanings although the two should never be confused! A siren in folklore is a woman who lured sailors to places where they would be shipwrecked.

A siren as we know it today is of course the thing on a police car that makes the wailing sound. You would be forgiven for thinking that the siren only produces one sound but there are in fact many sounds it can produce. Police will use the police car sirens differently depending on the situation and what they are trying to achieve. If the siren is used in conjunction with the lights then they are speeding to a priority call. The siren and lights used together tends to be only in the most urgent calls. More often than not, you will see a police car with flashing lights but they won’t always use the siren.

Full code 3 in most states would mean that a police officer has to respond to the call very quickly and that would entail use of police car sirens and the lights. An officer sometimes has the choice to make, they will be given details by the dispatcher and with that information they can make a decision on how they respond. The urgency of the call would mainly dictate how they do respond and if it is necessary to use all means at their disposal to clear traffic and arrive quickly at their destination. In many cases time is of the essence so the quicker the officers get there the better.

The police car sirens can produce different sounds for different reasons, a steady long blast or a wailing sound, and even some that vibrates or rumble to get your attention. A lot of the sirens on the market have an air-horn facility as well as different siren sounds. Some siren systems can be linked up to a Personal address system and via that to a CB radio, which makes the units very multi functional. We often hear police cars before we see them and that shows how effective the siren is in warning people. In our cities we hear police car sirens all of the time and that also shows just how hard our officers work.

If you do hear a siren when you are driving you would do well to take care and pay very close attention. Follow any ‘move over’ law guidance your state has published, and if you haven’t seen or heard anything about the move over law I would advise you check it out now! On approaching any scene with flashing lights and possible police car sirens you need to drop your speed and if possible move to an adjacent lane to pass any scene at roadside safely. Seeing flashing lights and hearing sirens is something we live with daily, but that doesn’t mean we should place any less importance on them.
