Ford sales figures for March 2011

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) have released the official figures for March car sales. As expected, UK car sales in March 2011 were down due to the scrappage scheme having ended. The figures showed that car sales fell 7.9% to 366,101 units. The scrappage was still driving plenty of interest In March 2010 especially as it was due to be abolished the following month. In retrospect, however, a 7.9% decrease is not as bad as it may initially seem.

Ford’s car sales were down from 64,498 to 52,829, and its share of the market was down from 15.6% to 14.4%. Ford’s retail share in March however was 14.0%, 0.9 percentage points up compared with the same period in 2010.

The positive news for Ford is that the UK sales leader in March and for the year to date was the Ford Fiesta with the Ford Focus in second place. The new Ford C-MAX also saw a rise in sales from 1,202 in March 2010 to 3,853 in March 2011.

Ford of Britain managing director Nigel Sharp, said: “March has actually bettered expectations with the overall market up 5.9 per cent on 2010, excluding scrappage volume. However, the market is intensely competitive and it has been important to maintain the right balance between sales/share and business profitability in this crucial sales month. Ford’s outstanding vehicle range has helped achieve this balance with new models such as the new Ford C-MAX, joined in March by the exciting new Ford Focus, contributing to a significant growth in retail share.”
