LED lightbars keeping first responders visible and safe

LED lightbars are everywhere. It’s not just first response vehicles that can have them fitted. The military make very good use of them and so do municipal, construction and farm vehicles.

LED lightbars are arguably one of the most important pieces of kit for emergency and first response vehicles. The flashing lightbars we see serve to inform us of a vehicles approach or that it is stationary at the side of the road in attendance of an incident. The sirens serve as the audible warning but the siren isn’t always used so we need to be aware that we will see flashing lights without the actual hearing of a siren. Flashing lights draw our eyes and that can help first responders pass safely on the road and avoid collision when they are stationary.

LED lightbars come in a variety of different colours to suit most agencies requirements. The lightbars also come in a huge range of sizes and with different light arrangements. A police cruiser may have need of take down lights, alley lights, a beacon light and traffic advisors in one unit. That may seem like a big ask of one unit but they certainly are available and that’s because many of the companies work directly with different agencies to produce the perfect lighting. In working closely together, the perfect lighting unit can be created and the producer has a built in market so it’s a win-win situation.

LED lightbars have several different uses, in the main they are visual warnings of a vehicles approach or hazard warning for a stationary vehicle. Red and blue are the most common colours for LED lightbars but they do come in many different colours to suit, obviously law enforcement vehicles will tend to have red, white and blue lights and non emergency vehicles would have amber or other single colour lights. The light colours are associated with different agencies and services and the colour will differ from state to state.

First response and emergency vehicles operate under extreme pressure and most of the calls they respond to are time critical. The only way to move anywhere approaching freely on some of our highways is with the use of flashing LED lightbars and sirens. The lightbars will be the first thing we see, but they won’t just be on top of the vehicle. There are lightbar units that can fit on all areas of a vehicle both inside and out. The newer lightbars are those fitted in the visor or dash area of a vehicle.

Flashing LED lightbars do convey a sense of emergency and urgency and that is what first response vehicles need. Us the public need to be aware that vehicles approach at speed and they give as much warning as they can. We can play our part by driving with utmost care and attention and with as few in car distractions as possible. Keep noise in your vehicle to a minimum, don’t be tempted to send SMS messages and certainly don’t talk on your cell phone. Safety on our roads is the responsibility of all of us.
