Issues And Developments In The Original Pinoy Music Scene

Filipinos now-a-days have different tastes when it comes to music. Whatever plays in the radio and in the music channels, they will like it. Whether it is international or local and as long as the beat and the lyrics are fine, the Pinoy public will love it.

Though sadly, few of us are already abandoning our own music, the OPM. Original Pinoy Music is a music genre that is composed of many Filipino music variants; it ranges from the tribal to the current Filipino mainstream music.

The evolution of the Filipino music dates back to ancient times. The Gong music, adapted from different parts of Asia, has been the first tribal music genre of the Philippines. From this, a large variety of music has been produced throughout the history, from the lovely beats of the courting Harana to the latest Original Pinoy Music.

However due to the explosion of media and technology, most of the Filipinos have switched their support to the western pop. With the help of mobility and internet, the syndication of music has never been easy. Everybody can get the latest from the international scene. That is why currently, local artists and performers are struggling to get enough exposure. The support given by companies to these individuals is strictly limited due to bigger deals with international artists. They have to fight their way through heaps of impressive performance to get signed by companies. A few might be lucky; most might not. Some might go overseas to try their music fortune there.

Though there are still companies who ignore the prestige and still give support to the local scene. For example, the karaoke company Wow Videoke provides licensed OPM songs to their karaoke machine song lists, providing royalty to the artists. Another company named M2K Music Licensing Corporation helps local songwriters make money with their songs.

Still, OPM continues to struggle with the today’s scene. If you are a Pinoy, you should take part of this struggle and prove your nationalism to the country.
