Truck and Van Sales Increase in April
Car sales may have taken a downturn over the last few months but according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), truck and van sales have increased. This is the seventh month in a row that figures have increased for truck and the 15th successive monthly rise for vans.
Truck sales were up 40.1% while van sales increased 21.4% to 18,081 this month. A number of the manufacturers are enjoying growth, led by MAN, who are up 178% for the year with over 1,300 registrations. Also enjoying a significant increase are Volvo (up 152%) and Renault (up 77%). DAF and Scania are topping the monthly sales for April, with 800 and 470 sales respectively.
Sue Robinson, Director of the RMI National Franchised Dealers Association, which represents commercial vehicle and franchised car dealers in the UK commented, “The RMI expect truck and van sales growth to continue partly due to the implementation of the Low Emission Zone within the M25 area in January 2012. Commercial vehicle owners are aware of the need to buy more carbon friendly vehicles to avoid the charges.”
The new London Low Emission Zone regulations come into effect on 3rd January 2012 and companies face huge fines if they fail to comply. It is well known that the regulations will take immediate effect, so many companies are therefore upgrading their fleets well in advance.
