What Is Industrial Design?
Industrial design is the practical application of both art and science to improve a product in its functional and aesthetic features, in order to enhance its commercial viability. Such designing can be done before a product is officially launched or later for enhancing the quality of the product.
The primary consideration of industrial design is the way in which the consumer will perceive the product. The customers should see the commodity as worthy and valuable enough to spend money on. The desired result in such cases can be achieved by enhancing the functionality as well as appearance of the product, in order to make the product attractive to a lot of customers.
A detailed research into the purchasing habits of consumers and their choices and preferences is the first step in designing a particular product. This must be followed by other aspects like sketching, prototyping, and a thorough testing before the product is ready for marketing. These days, there is a growing trend of making use of 3D software and CAD programs for making these jobs easier.
The basic purpose of industrial design is to enhance the whole feel of the product. Designers have to figure out the usefulness, durability, and user friendliness of the product besides its appearance and aspects like colour or even the sounds. Moreover, it is also possible for the designer to decrease the expenditure on production by introducing more cost effective designs.
Industrial design is not restricted to the above features but also extends to other factors like product packaging, analysis of the market demand for the product, and even the study of the customers’ reaction to the design of the product. It is for this reason that industrial designers have to undergo years of strict training before they take on the profession and start handling live projects.
Some of the well known industrial designers are Raymond Loewy, who designed the Coca-Cola bottle, Jonathan Ive, who is known for designing the iMac and Brooks Stevens, the extremely popular designer of the Harley-Davidson motorbikes.
