Nissan to produce next New York Cab
The Taxi and Limousine Commission of New York set out in 2009 to find a new Taxi for the metropolitan city. The commission were looking for the “Taxi of tomorrow” to replace the iconic New York yellow cab. The yellow cab in New York is as much of an icon as London’s black cab so any change is significant.
Nissan, the Japanese car maker has won the bid to become the provider of the “taxi for tomorrow”. The Nissan NV200 taxi will be produced at Nissan’s car plant in Mexico and is a modified version of the firm’s current compact van.
The Nissan NV200 based yellow cabs will be delivered from the end of 2013, currently that contract will run for 10 years till 2023. Nissan is also set to introduce up to six electric Nissan Leafs next year for taxi drivers to try out in a pilot scheme.
The Taxi model of the Nissan NV200 will have customised features such as, 2.0-litre four cylinder petrol engine, “low-annoyance horn with exterior lights that indicate when the vehicle is honking,” transparent roof panel and a mobile charging station for passengers.
Carlos Tavares the Chairman of Nissan Americas said, “Nissan is proud to provide the next generation of taxis for the City of New York. The NV200 taxi will give Nissan the opportunity to showcase our dedication to vehicle quality and urban mobility to more than 600,000 passengers every day.”
The NV200 based taxi does not look anything like the current NY yellow cab; it looks much more like a Nissan Cube in Cardiff.
