Recently a study was done in the UK on people and their mobile phones. The study had said that every 12-18 month people in the UK will either upgrade or replace their mobile phones for a better model – whether the old one is in working condition or not! Frankly, I even know people who do it every 6 months to every 12 months and the reason is because they are tech geeks and they have to have all thew newest technology!
Who could blame them for wanting to keep up? Unfortunately, technology is ever changing, and by the time you buy something today, you know by next month something even better is going to come out! The thing about getting a new mobile is that people don’t know what to do with the old mobiles. Can you just throw them away? Well, you can… if you want them rotting away with all the other millions of mobile phones.
Recent research suggests that it could take as long as thousands of years for an old mobile and its battery inside to fully break down! This is because of the different non perishable metals and plastics inside the phone. Beyond the landfills you also have to consider that when you throw your mobile away, it’s chemicals COULD end up leaking into the nearby water supply. It’s estimated that one mobile phone that is incorrectly disposed of and ends up in water could pollute as much as six hundred thousand litre.
Thankfully the UK government has gotten smarter (definitely smarter than the US). New government legislation has recently been introduced in the UK that states that it is now an offence to thrown an old electronic device in the dustbin. So where exactly are you supposed to put these? Well, one option available to you is a process called mobile phone recycling. Phone recycling is something that is somewhat newer, but more and more people are getting involved in it.
