Using a CPM Machine Post Surgery

Do you understand what a CPM machine is? CPM stands for continuous passive motion which refers to an advanced type of physical therapy used after joint surgeries including knee, shoulder, and elbow surgery in order to hasten the rehabilitation time and minimize pain in the process. Although this is an immensely effective and revolutionary tool to be used in the rehab of joints, it has been around and in use for beyond 30 years which also gives you peace of mind that this procedure has been tested over a long span of time and has shown to benefit the patients who have used it. These days it is for the most part used after orthopedic surgery and has been tested to: 1) decrease swelling, 2) lessen pain, 3) maintain and increase range of motion, 4) repress formation of scar tissue.

It works by passively and gently moving the patients joint in a slow and rhythmic sequence. This gentle motion is accomplished passively to jump in from engaging the patients muscles around the repaired site. This continuous passive motion can also help the patient by lessening the risk of complications because of the numerous benefits offered by using this form of treatment. Because this therapy is used after surgery, you will feel pain, but this pain is from the surgery and not from the CPM machine. As long as you follow your doctors recommendations and use the machine as advised, you will feel less pain more quickly than if your fixed joint is kept immobile without using this type of method. You can contrast it to how your joints feel following a long car ride. When you get out, you are super stiff and tight and need to stretch out to feel normal once more. Well this same thing happens with areas around the repaired injury if no movement is made in the area, so when using a CPM machine it essentially acts as lubrication to maintain that area of your body from becoming excessively stiff which would extend your rehab time.

Even if your doctor didn’t order a CPM for your surgery, you can call upon him to order one for you. If you are trying to reduce your swelling, abate your pain, maintain and improve your range of motion, and impede scar tissue formation, ask your doctor to order a CPM for your surgery. He or she may not be aware that this type of procedure is easily convenient. In the rare situation that a CPM machine isn’t the perfect treatment for you, your doctor will be able to advise you either way.
