Dodge Charger Chryslers Classic Car

The Dodge Charger is one of America’s classic muscle cars. First released in 1964, It was one of Detroit’s premier cars. It truly was the first of its kind. Bringing style in a road warrior kind of way.

Sleek lines and hide away headlights, also a first for the Detroit Motor City. Chrysler needed a car that would show off it’s pride. But also that wouldn’t take away from there existing Chrysler products.
There answer was the Charger, Everything about it screamed hot rod and Mopar. The Dodge just so happened to remain intact until 1978.

Although the future generations would never be the same. 1977 would prove to be the last year for the great Charger’s of the past. Never again would Dodge give us a car with such quality. Diminishing sales would force Chrysler to drop there Charger, Not to mention the fuel crises that 1970’s America was facing.

In 11 years of racing, the Dodge Charger running in close to stock form won 124 NASCAR Cup races and took three drivers to five championships. Richard Petty won three of his seven titles behind the wheel of a Dodge Charger, according to Dodge.

The model line up expanded to include the Charger R/T, equipped like the Coronet R/T – it came with a 440 Magnum, heavy duty suspension and brakes, and the bulletproof Torqueflite 727 3 speed auto with a 4 speed manual optional. The rear bumblebee stripes were a deletable option. Hemi sales went up to 467, still quite small.
Dodge was understandably torn between the usual annual styling changes and not wanting to mess with a good thing; they made minor changes to the grille as a compromise. The 1968 has a chrome bumper under the grille, the 1969 has a chrome center divider in the grille, and the 1970 has a rectangular chrome bumper around the grille.
The standard engine in the Charger was the 318 cubic inch V-8. Options incline the 383 cubic inch two barrel V8, the 426 Hemi, and the 440 Magnum.
While stressing its sportiness, Charger also stressed its new powerful safety features, including a new stove box door hinged at the top so that it could not fail open and downward, and window crank knots made of soft plastic formed into a tulip shape to yield in an impact.
