Ways you can get involved with the photography community
If you’re a budding photographer, one of the best ways to learn new techniques and meet other inspiring photographers is to get involved with the photography community in your country or local area. Here are some ways you can get involved, either by viewing some exhibitions:
* Take a course – Many photography schools around Australia offer short or semester-long courses in everything photography related; from learning how to use your specific brand of camera, to shooting landscapes and using different lenses. You’ll learn some new skills and meet other photographers, as well as make friends in the photography world. Check online for local courses in your city.
* Events and exhibitions – Throughout the year, various venues and galleries hold photography exhibitions, and sometimes the photographer is actually there to give a talk and answer questions. These are a great chance to mingle, meet other photographers, hear tips from the experts, and view some inspiring photos. Canon’s EOS Festival of Photography will hold dozens of exhibitions and events throughout Sydney and Brisbane from May to July.
* Online competitions – There are plenty of online photography competitions and collaborations held monthly and yearly, and many are online. Canon’s World Of EOS has heaps of its own, including Photochains, Photo5, 1Wall, and People’s Gallery. They accept entries from anyone with a compact digital camera, entry level SLR or professional camera, and you’d be surprised at the amazing shots taken, even by beginners! Don’t forget Flickr either – it’s another great online community for photographers to display, comment and share each other’s work.
However you choose to share your photos with others, getting involved with the photography community is a great chance to learn, and to show what you’ve learned or taught yourself. It doesn’t matter if you love SLR cameras or compact cameras, there’s a space out there for everybody’s photos and memories. You just have to find it.
