Several methods to harvest tomato seedlings
There are several methods to harvest tomato seedlings depending on the resources one can dispose for the care of the seedlings. One should plan on transplanting the tomato seedlings within two weeks after the frost date.
There are pros and cons to each system. For small quantities like say less than 100 plants, the jiffy pellets work remarkably well. Nettings of the pellets should be cut properly before transplanting. The jiffy pots dry out quickly and they don’t break down very easily in the garden so if using the pots be cautious to cut the sides or remove the pot before they are planted outside.
If tomato seedlings are to be grown in huge number then they should be grown in seed trays with minimum distance of ½ inch between the tomato seedlings. Here are the steps to be followed in growing seedlings:
1. Only use the best seed starting mix which is available. Potting soil or top soil should not be used, use only the best soil-less seed starting mix.
2. Start harvesting the seeds about 5 to 8 weeks before planning to transplant outdoors.
3. The seed mix should be thoroughly mixed and placed in the tray.
4. Place the seed in the mix and cover with a plastic bag, leave one end propped open for a little air circulation.
5. Place the tray near some warm place like on top of the TV, Refrigerator, etc. or else use a heating mat to get 70-85 degrees F.
6. As soon as there is first sign of germination, remove the bag and place the tray under grow lights for 16 hours/day.
7. Temperature should be maintained between 50 to 70 degrees for the growing seedlings.
8. Transplant the seedlings to cells or pot when the true leaves on seedlings are about 1/2 inch long.
9. Bury in such a manner so that stem can root, place the tomato seedlings under light and allow them to develop properly.
10. Watering should be done only when the seedlings are dry, try avoiding wilting of plants. Fertilize only if it seems preferable to do so.
11. A general fertilizer mix made up of 2 feedings of 1 level teaspoon of 15-30-15 to a gallon of water and using that gallon on about 150 plants.
12. Transplant outdoors when the seedlings are about 8 to 10 inches tall.
