Will You Be the Next One Saved by an AED at Workplace?
Our heart is an electrical pump which under normal condition keeps on generating the electricity, required by the muscle cells for its contraction and thereby producing Heart beat. But sometimes due to problem in electrical stimulation, no Heart beat is produced resulting in condition called Sudden Cardiac Arrest. This reduces blood supply to brain and other vital organs, and subsequently victim may die. It has been estimated that about 90%victims die even before reaching hospital. But thankfully, use of AED brings down the mortality rate considerably. So it is advised to have it where ever possible.
AED (automated External Defibrillator.) is helpful to restore a heart to normal condition. It is an electronic device which automatically diagnoses the heart rhythm and determines if a shock is needed. In other words it helps in reversing the uncoordinated contraction of cardiac muscle by discharging the electric current from defibrillator. This equipment is designed in such a way that it can be used even by a common man.
Need to have AED pads at workplace
According to the latest reports issued by American Heart Association, working professionals are more prone to CVD (including SCA). As we know, human resources are the most important asset for any organization and without them the organizations can not survive even for a day. So, it is the moral responsibility of every organization to look after their employee’s health.
Many organizations have taken a step forward and have arranged for free medical check-ups to their employees to check for any symptoms of Cardio Vascular Disorder (including SCA) and also providing the basic AEDs training to their employees.
In addition, Government agencies and few other NGO’s are also providing Free AED kits at public premises.
AED survival rate enhancer
Cardiac arrest occurs due to non-functioning of the heart muscles. It involves an electrical malfunctioning of a heart. It is more dangerous than heart attack as medical help (CPR – AED) is needed immediately after cardiac arrest unlike in heart attack, else the patient will die after 4-6 minutes. Here, first aid can be an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). It sends electrical signal through heart and brings back the heart rhythm to normal motion. CPR can also be used in SCA which consist of external cardiac massage and artificial respiration. But it ensures only a mere 1-5% survival rate. However if AED is used in conjunction with CPR, It can increase a SCA victim’s chance of survival by 75%.

So we should give it the top most priority. So, keeping an AED pads at workplace can fulfill this purpose and help us to prevent the dangers of SCA (Sudden Cardiac Arrest).
