Supercar Profile – Enzo Ferrari
A theme did continue with the Enzo though as it would continue the tradition in this line of Ferrari cars to utilise Ferrari formula one technology as much as possible. This technology included such things as a carbon fibre body, a formual one style electrohydraulic gear shift, and Silicon Carbide ceramic composite disc brakes re-inforced with carbon fibre.
New technology doesn’t end there though as the Enzo also benefitted from a new generation of V12 engine. Based on the V8 from the Maserati Quattroporte, the engine is mid mounted and is normally aspirated. The 5998cc unit delivers 651bhp at 7800 rpm. This is huge power in comparison to the car that started it all, the Ferrari F40.
The 1365kg Enzo reaches 62mph from rest in only 3.15 seconds and while the F40 managed 120 in 11 seconds, the Enzo is already at 136mph by this mark. Top speed has been recorded at 220mph.
Ferrari originally sent out invites to previous Ferrari customers who had bought F40’s and F50’s. All 349 cars were pre-sold to these customers and demand was such that Ferrari decided to up the run to 399 cars. A couple of curious things are worth noting about the number of cars built. The first thing is that an Enzo delivered to an attorney in Texas in 2003 was involved in a slight mishap and ended up being totally destroyed by fire. Ferrari decided that a 400th car should be built to replace it. However, this car carried the same serial number as the original car, thereby keeping the official number of cars at 399.
Finally though, a 400th Enzo was built. Following the 2004 Tsunami disaster, Ferrari commissioed a special one-off Enzo which was auctioned by Sotheby’s. The car fetched twice the list price at $1,274,229. All the proceeds went to the Tsunami relief effort.
The Enzo Ferrari is as radical to look at as it is to drive. At Ferraristi.net we have a great Enzo Ferrari gallery for you to take a look at. We also have quite a number of other Ferrari road car profiles and galleries. Why not come along and take a look around?
