Audi A3 e-tron

At the Shanghai Auto Show 2011 Audi unveiled the Audi A3 e-tron. It is a four door, four seat notchback saloon. Audi claim that it features new technologies such as the Multi Media Interface (MMI), infotainment system and of course the plug-in hybrid power train.
The Audi A3 e-tron concept on display at the show is powered by two engines – a 211PS 1.4 TFSI four-cylinder engine with turbo charging and petrol direct injection and an electric motor with an output of 27PS. With a combined output of 238PS, working together the engine and electric motor propel the Audi A3 e-tron concept from 0 – 62mph in 6.8 seconds and has a top speed of 144mph.
The concept features lithium-ion batteries located behind the rear seats. With a charge capacity of 12 kWh the concept can achieve a range of up to 34 miles on pure electric power alone. The batteries can be charged from a household socket, meaning in most cases the car can provide a completely emission free driving experience for city and urban driving.

As it has two engines there has to be two transmission as well, or at least two transmission structures. In the A3 e-tron a seven speed S tronic serves as the transmission. Two clutches are in play seamlessly shifting between the electric petrol units. Gears are alternatively shifted by the two clutches quickly, smoothly and without any noticeable interruption of traction.

The Audi A3 in Scotland looks very much like a traditional car but nothing like a typical A3, its notchback body style has not been seen before in an A3. The inside is very futuristic and reminiscent of its plug in hybrid technology.
