Banners and Flags of Australia
I really enjoy observing the countless banners and flags that are flown from all kinds of poles throughout Australia. The national flag of Australia is considered a beautiful historical flag by pretty much everyone. Like other world banners and flags, the flag of Australia has different “variants” that are officially recognized.
The design was first picked or determined back in the early years of the 1900-s. This happened following a worldwide competition. In 1902 the flag was first flown from a flagpole in Melbourne. Some modifications were made to the flag in the then following years, as a result of some confusion but also because of intentional reasons. The current flag design features the “Union Flag” in the canton of the Australia flag, a large white star in the lower left part of the hoist side the flag, and a grouping of smaller white stars.
There have a number of discussions and debates over whether or not the national flag of Australia should removed the Union Flag from the upper left portion or canton. Fascinatingly, Prime Ministers of the past were in keen support of the suggested change. ANFA, short for the Australian National Flag Association has been objecting the suggested change however, whereas “Ausflag” supports the change.
Before the Europeans landed on this territory a few hundred years ago, the land was mainly inhabited by indigenous Australians. The Dutch found the territory during the early years of the 17th century. The British claimed the east portion of the land a good century and a half later. Today, Australia is considered the world’s 13th largest country.
Like Old Glory, the Australian flag is always to be displayed or attached to residential flagpoles in position “superior” to that of any other flag throughout the Australian land. Interestingly, private vessels can display either the red ensign or the Australian flag. Flags damaged by wear and tear should be disposed of in a respectful way. The cutting of the flag in small pieces is considered dignified.
Visit Colonial Flag for free shipping offers this season only on residential flagpoles and more. Respective business also offers a wide selection of flagpole parts.
