Save Money by De-Junking During Your Move
When a family moves, it is a big one. The belongings are stuffed into close to thirty huge moving boxes and then the moving company offers to deliver the five most important ones while promising to send the rest shortly. Many a times the other moving boxes get lost in the transit. They eventually get delivered much later at which time, the stuff in it do not have much use. Relocation is a wake-up call and a reminder to de-junk one’s life and gain big time.
If it is a self-service move, a smaller truck is the way to go. Limitation in terms of space could act as a good decision maker in deciding what to take along. It is of great importance as to why and where to, the move is taking place. As an example, if it is move to the retirement apartment, it is hardly reasonable taking along all the stuff rather than leaving behind half of it. If the destination does not experience the winter chill, a part of the winter clothing could be disposed off. As far as the kids are concerned, let them make up their mind what all of their stuff they most want to keep. They are more often found not to want to keep a big chunk of their old stuff. A move is also the time to get rid of the clutter such as unread books, decaying project work, furniture unfit for the new house, half empty cans and containers etc. You could also advertise in your neighborhood and tell friends that you are cutting down on your household possessions which would save you a garage sale in case time is short. A sign for the same purpose could be staked in front of the house. You might end up feeling better doing away with an expensive item used since a long time now and knowing that a friend would still make good use of it. At the end of the day, the packers and movers would have less work to do. Not to mention you pay up only as per the workload handled by the movers and packers.
Getting rid of the junk is saving a big share of the moving costs. Not to mention time. It could actually prove to be therapeutic.
