Keeping it in the family!
European cultures tend to value family possibly more than we do in the UK. Italy, Spain and France all have a strong family bonding and you often see the whole family out for dinner. My husband is Italian and he assures me that it is an ideal way to live. He tells me that Italian families all help each other financially and simply being a family member opens door which otherwise would remain close.
Consequently he was very impressed when I told him that my brother wanted to offer our son a job at his very prestigious Ecommerce Site ecommerce company. The job was intended for a graduate of university and even though he had never been to university, they were willing to give him a chance. After an informal interview, the job was his.
I am pleased for my son and really do hope he does well. However I cannot help feeling a little apprehensive. In the UK it is almost frowned upon when someone gets on well in life simply because of family connections. What if the rest of the company take an instant dislike to him just because he is the bosses nephew? Or what if my son just isn’t up to the job and my brother does not like to sack him? I just find the whole situation “icky”.
My husband says that I am over reacting and I hope he is right. I suppose we will find out one way or another.
