There are many sites which offer collections of free or inexpensive scripts. But are they worth bothering with?

All I would say is be careful, While these scripts may at first sight appear useful, many of these scripts are, in internet terms, ancient. Some date back to 2001, and will be so full of security holes that your website would be a spammers and hackers paradise.

Not only that, but many of the websites where the scripts originally came from are now dead. If the scripts were still of use, those websites would still be there.

Another problem, which could conceivably be more serious, is that some of the scripts are stolen. Yes STOLEN You will find din the ‘rights’ notes that the script must not be given away, or even sold on.

So not only do you have some dodgy scripts, you may also be handling stolen goods, and just becuse there is a conception that “Because it is on the internet it must be free”, does not make it so. People have invested time and money into their projects, and deserve suitable renumeration.

But, there are plenty of free and cheap scripts around, all you need to do is Google, or Bing :) for free or cheap scripts and go to genuine sites. Try a site like hotscripts as an example, and if you are offered a large number of scripts for free, or a few dollars, caveat emptor.
