The advantages of a LED visor light for emergency vehicles

The led visor light is a useful addition to the hazard lights of any emergency vehicle. It can flash many types of signals and can also spell out messages.

A led visor light is useful for any emergency vehicle. It is a mini set of lights that fit to the visor and are not visible when the visor is up but when lowered the light is bright and visible for afar. This is especially true if the light is mounted so it aligns with the bottom of the visor and the led visor light can shine through the windscreen below the tinted strip.

A led visor light is very efficient bright and long lasting. Led stands for “light emitting diode” and is not a new technology. In fact they were invented over 100 years ago. They are a semi-conductor and the light is actually given off by electron passing one way. Thus the light emitted is almost a by-product of the semi-conductor. Initially they were used to show when something was powered up and they were wired into the power circuit for that item, typical examples being the light on a CCTV camera and LED on a pc which flashes when the hard disk is turning. Being a diode they only allow current to pass one way only so they are never used on alternating current.

In recent years the LED has been exploited more and more for a number of their very useful properties. Firstly the technology has improved so that they now are able to be made to be very bright. Secondly they produce no heat. Incandescent lights give off heat as the light is produced by the glowing of a high resistance filament heating up. This heat is a waste and a heavy user of current. LED’s light is produced by electrons passing along the path of the current flow. Thirdly they use a lot less current than the equivalent Incandescent lights would. Fourthly they are far more reliable. LED’s typically can last over 25,000 hours and are not damaged by being constantly switched off and on.

So here we have a truly great invention and what does one use a led visor light for? Well normal emergency vehicles these days have roof mounted lightbars to signal when they are in a hurry to get to an emergency. But there is no such thing as too much attention grabbing in these circumstances. If an ambulance, fire vehicle, or a police patrol car need to get somewhere fast they want as many lights flashing as possible. In addition the roof Lightbar is visible from a fair distance but the led visor light can be seen directly in the rear view mirror of the vehicle directly in front.

Typically a led visor light can be strapped or fixed to the visor and powered though the cigar lighter. The colors and messages can be varied to suit the vehicle and typically the display would be red or blue or red and blue alternating flashing lights. The flash rhythm may be varied. The display could also me writing. It might say in reverse “Slow down” or “Move Over” or “Police Stop” which can be read by the driver in the car in front’s rear view mirror.

Another user of the led visor light would be the “stealth” or unmarked police or traffic patrol car. Typically these do not want to betray their presence as they wish to catch perpetrators in the act of their misdemeanor. So they would have hidden beacons behind the grill of their car and a led visor light both of which could be deployed instantly to let the offender know he has been nabbed.
