Garage Sales: Taking Out the Trash

Have you ever had a garage sale and looked around at the end of the day wondering if you sold anything? It seems like junk just accumulates in our homes and garages, doesn’t it? You sit out there all day long with questionable people digging through your stuff and you hold on to your money bag like there is no tomorrow. At the end of the day, you are faced with a choice. Do you donate the rest of this stuff? Do you drag it back inside? Do you have another weekend of sitting in a lounge chair watching cars drive by as they crane their necks to look at your stuff? Well, this is the conundrum that many people have after a garage sale.

Think about this from another perspective: Are there items leftover at your garage sales that are worth enough money that you will not just donate them? For most people, the answer is yes. Let’s say you have a nice figurine that you priced at $10. You think you paid $50 for it, so $10 is a fair price. Well, the old lady who wanted it at your garage sale offered you $1 for it. You balked and she walked. You are not about to donate that figurine.

Here is the idea: Drive around on a Saturday morning as all of the garage sales are underway. Have business cards printed with your cell phone number on them. Walk around the sale and casually mention to the owner that you will take away their junk that does not sell. Now, they may say no because they want the tax write off. At this point, you can decide if you want to offer a little money to motivate them. You can take the items that are worth something and resell them on eBay for a profit!
