SLA is not SLI
Have you seen the title of this article? The author will tell you something about sealed lead acid battery which is short for SLA. It is SLA, not SLI that is starting, lighting and ignition. They are different. SLI is starting batteries which are also lead acid battery and used to start vehicles. The past lead acid battery finally evolved into the present-day sealed lead acid battery. These batteries are made of a combination of chemical ingredients that react with lead sheets that are placed in the body of the battery. The chemicals include lead, arsenic, calcium, electrolyte sulphuric acid, lead oxide, tin, and lead sulphate.
The other components of a sealed lead acid battery include the battery body which has a re-sealable safety vent, high integrity terminal seal, positive and negative plates, plastic internal container, highly retentive separator, and lead grids enclosed in a metal can enclosure. These batteries also have lead wires that are basically stranded copper wires with insulation and which are coded with red and black colors. The lead wires have their ends dipped in wax, but before using them the wax is removed.
The latest development in the manufacture of sealed lead iron batteries is the introduction of the Li-ion technology in which the energy/weight ratio is nearly 0.16 kWh per kilogram. The electrolyte consists of lithium salts in an organic solvent. Although lithium salts are not very dangerous if handled properly, they are difficult to recycle and their extraction is extremely carbon intensive. As such, this method is not very environment-friendly.
There have been significant developments in sealed lead acid batteries and they are now being used in many areas of the industry. They are environment-friendly because almost the entire lead content can be recycled.
Sealed lead acid battery is now being used in many industries like automotive engines, medical equipment, aviation, electronics, telecommunications, solar power, and garden equipment.
Many of the most common consumer complaints about SLA batteries are about how they won’t take or hold a charge. Battery life decreases as energy requirements of your application or device increase. If you want the best sealed lead acid battery for your money, it is important to take excellent care of the battery after its purchase. Otherwise, even the best SLA battery could suffer from poor performance within 6 months. Battery charging and maintenance is extremely important. The battery should be cleaned using baking soda and a few tablespoons of water. Cable connections should be cleaned and tightened on a weekly basis. Battery issues often occur due to dirty and loose connections. Make sure to check the fluid level of the battery and run battery tests on a regular basis.
