Passenger Safety for Motorcyclists

Even though motorcycle accidents share similarities when it comes to traffic accidents, motorcycle accidents are typically far more severe than that of car or truck accidents. One of the most important things for any rider to remember is the fact that motorcycle accidents can and will happen. Hopefully it will not happen to you. In order to help keep you safe, read up on some of these great motorcycle safety tips to help you prepare for riding with a passenger.

When Carrying a Passenger

• Before you even consider riding with a passenger, be sure that your motorcycle is designed to actually carry a passenger.

• If you are considering carrying a child, be sure that the child in question is mature enough to handle the responsibilities. The child should be able to reach the footrests, wear a helmet, protective gear, and can easily hold onto you or the passenger hand-holds.

• Some states do have minimum age requirements for motorcycle passengers so keep that in mind.

• The passenger should be instructed to keep his or her legs away from the muffler in order to avoid burns.

• The passenger should limit their movement and talking.

• Be aware that your passenger creates extra weight that can and most likely will affect braking, moving forward and riding through a corner.

• Avoid quick stops since it causes your passenger to move forward and bump your helmet with theirs.

• Passing requires more time and space.

• The force of wind will feel more distinct.

• Check your owner’s manual for weight limitations.

• Give your passenger some time to get used to the speed of riding and the sensation of leaning.

• If riding into a corner, make sure the passenger knows to look over the operator’s shoulder in the direction of the corner.

• If you are in the middle of crossing an obstacle, make sure the passenger knows to stand on the motorcycle pegs with their knees bent. This allows the legs to absorb the shock upon impact.
