Diarrhea, commonly known as Loose Motions, is the condition when one passes out unformed stools from one’s body. It causes cramps accompanied with a vomiting sensation, and leads to weakness and loss of vitamins in the body. It is a very painful and uncomfortable condition, which can cause dehydration, and in extreme cases can even lead to death. The intestine in the body normally absorbs water secreted by the stomach, but during diarrhea, the excess water is not absorbed resulting in loose motions. Since there is a continuous loss of liquids from the body, it is essential to have regular intake of fluids to prevent matters from getting worse.
Some simple home remedies for diarrhea can be followed to get relief. They help in eliminating the various causes of diarrhea, which could be anything from lactose intolerance to gastrointestinal disorder.
Buttermilk, very easily available at home, is the simplest and most inexpensive of all home remedies for diarrhea. Drinking buttermilk with a pinch of salt 2-3 times a day, for 1-2 days goes a long way in relieving the inflammation in the digestive track of the patient. It provides great relief to the intestinal track, especially if diarrhea is caused due to consumption of spicy or unhygienic food, or contaminated water. The acids in the buttermilk fight the bacteria and virus in the intestine.
Carrot juice is easy to prepare and good to consume. A small amount of carrot can be boiled in 3 times water till it turns soft. It should then be strained, followed by mashing, and should be consumed adding a little salt and water. It prevents the growth of harmful bacteria in the intestine, and is one of the best home remedies for diarrhea.
Turmeric is known to be a great healer for its antiseptic properties. It is used for many ailments and diseases and is thus, one of the many home remedies for diarrhea. Two teaspoons of turmeric rhizome juice can be taken in one cup of buttermilk, and positive results can be seen in 1-2 days.
Mango seeds can be dried and crushed to powder, and kept aside. A teaspoon of this powder along with a little honey can be consumed in any season. It is an excellent medicine for diarrhea.
Drinking fresh tomato juice with a little salt is also very beneficial during diarrhea.
Moreover, drinking plenty of coconut water, arrowroot water and barley is also helpful. Pomegranate juice too helps reduce the weakness caused due to diarrhea.
One should take care to avoid foods that one is allergic to, and result in diarrhea. Also, self-medication should be avoided, and a doctor should be consulted for proper medicines.
Diarrhea in infants, old people and pregnant ladies should be treated with utmost care. Children as well as adults must take care to wash their hands before eating, and after defecating. Infants must not be allowed to put toys in their mouth, as they could be unhygienic and can lead to diarrhea. In case of loss of liquids through unformed stools or vomiting, the person should immediately be taken for medical care, as delaying it could be fatal.
