What are the Different Types of Gas Pressure Regulators?

Thus, the choice of Gas pressure regulators depends on its nature of application and use.

Gas pressure regulators help in reducing the pressure carried in between the storage and the end use. These regulators act as device, which ensures to regulate the gas pressure throughout its use. They undergo loading mechanism to control the gas pressure, which senses the pressure using an adequate range of pressure gauge. Based on its performance, there are four important types of regulators. They include – line regulator, special regulator, general regulator, and highly sensitive regulator. Thus, the entire family of gas regulator consists of four categories.

Line regulators are in use especially for low-pressure vessels. They have an inlet and an outlet, which face opposite to each other. General-purpose regulators have low building costs. They are cheaper and have longer life. These gas regulators work well in non-corrosive environment. However, if exposed to corrosive environments such as seawater, they start showing degradation. These consist of brass and have a diaphragm designed out of neoprene rubbers. However, care has to be taken, as some elastomeric rubbers show permeability to oxygen molecules, which makes them unsuitable for use. For applications involving gas pressure chromatography, elastomeric diaphragms made out of impermeable rubber are used. Gas chromatography is a scientific method of separating two different phases. The two different phases generally consist of a mobile phase and a stationary phase. Gas pressure regulators play an important role in dividing these phases.

For highly sensitive regulators, materials other than neoprene are used. Such regulators consist of stainless steel body, which exhibit better corrosion resistant property and can withstand highly corrosive environments such as seawater or chlorine water. Regulating gases at ultra high pressures is not an easy science. For such custom applications, special regulators are used. Special regulators are helpful in regulating highly corrosive gases at ultra high pressures. They consist of materials, which exhibit higher compressive strength. These often come in oxides of metals or ceramics exhibiting highest corrosion resistant property. These regulators find use in regulating gas pressures for plasma or oxy-acetylene torches, which is in use for welding and cutting of steel. Gas Pressure Regulators are thus essential and their choice depends on their functions and application.
