The Greatest Thing About A Hip Hop Beat
I know you probably thought I was going to write that the greatest thing about hip hop beats has to do with the emotional impact of the beat and what it makes you feel or something of that nature. And while the impact a hip hop beat has is really important to its success it’s not the most important aspect. Instead, and in truth, the most important aspect of a hip hop beat is what you bring to it.
But what you bring to it has more of a complex meaning than it may at first seem. Because really this means not only what type of lyrical skill and story telling ability that you have but also if you are compatible with the beat or not. There are a lot of hot beats out there, but if the rap beat aint working with your style, then you’re better off not even wasting your time buying it. And if you’re really going to lay out money on beats, and you’re that serious you should spend a good deal of time thinking about what types of hip hop beats you really do work best with.
Not only should you consider the tempo of any given hip hop beats and its suitability to your needs but you should also consider the rhyme scheme the beat seems to call for and whether or not it jives with your style. This can be one of the most difficult parts of creating rap music, finding out what your zone is with regard to hip hop beats.
But if you can’t or don’t learn where your niche is in hip hop beats, then no matter how hot the beat is you’ll always sound like an amateur. Or you will at least sound like you’re lost on the track or in over your head. That’s why I say that it’s most important what you bring to the rap beat because you in the end will make all the difference.
Beats don’t make the rapper, the rapper makes the beats, and if you can’t learn how to work with beats, then you can’t learn to be a rapper. In the end rap is about a lot more than having a sick freestyle. With hip hop, and you can’t forget this, what you’re doing is creating music. And music’s got to hit you on a lot of different levels before it will resonate. You’ve got to make it happen. It’s got to feel like hip hop plain flows through your veins, and, not only that, but that you own the rap beat, and that it was in fact designed for you to kill the way you killed it. When you get done with a beat, it should be like no one else will want to touch it, because they know it’s yours. And that’s not to say that others won’t be able to do well with your beats, but you should aspire to the level of the game that your flow meshes so well with the hip hop beats you choose that it’s like they were born together.
