Endearing and Fun Private Clubs will leave you begging for more by Todd Rutherford
Private Clubs in America and Around the World is a captivating title that gives readers an authentic and humorous look at the lives of the privileged elite inside the most exclusive clubs in the world. Chapters include “Basic Terms and Phrases,” “Types of Private Clubs,” “The Board of Directors,” “Club Committees,” ” Services and Facilities,” “Esther,” “Employees,” and “Members.”
Clive Endive Ogive, IV is a pseudonym for Norm Spitzig, and a part of the pseudonym is borrowed from a person who was a club member for more than 40 years. The name reminded Mr. Spitzig “of the snobby, typical know-all club president.” The story is told from Mr. Ogive’s point of view.
The character, Esther, had to have her own chapter, Spitzig said. “She knew everybody’s name; who was having an affair; and whose grandchildren were visiting,” he said. “She showed up for work when she wanted, if she wanted, if she wasn’t out of town or if she wasn’t retired. Every private club in America has an Esther. If you belong to a club, you will recognize the characters.”
The background behind the novel is as fascinating as the book itself. Drawing from over 25 years of experience as a general manager at numerous private clubs, the author has written about his experiences and insights and is sharing them with readers. His hilarious descriptions of the inner workings of private clubs leave readers begging for more!-and Mr. Spitzig has not disappointed.
He has just released the equally funny sequel, Murder and Mayhem at Old Bunbury. The endearing characters from Private Clubs are back and funnier than ever! In the sequel, the club president, Clive and Esther, along with the waitress, all set out to solve a grisly murder at Old Bunbury. After several false arrests and a wide array of other antics, the case is finally solved. Along the way, readers are given another inside look at the eccentric characters, hilarious situations, and enduring friendships in the exclusive world of private clubs.
