Locksmiths know which door locks are best suited for your particular door and they also know how best to fit the door lock. In this article I will be going over some of the different types of door locks and where they would be used in your house.

Mortise lock

This is the type of lock you will usually find in older building and it quite a common door lock. The mortise lock is made up of two separate parts; the lock body and the box keep. The lock body is made up of other pieces such as the lock trim and the key cylinder or lever. The door hand knob is attached to the lock trim and the key fits into the key cylinder. The lock is not attached to the door, but is rather inserted into the door by cutting into the wood, the hole which is made for the lock to fit into is called a mortise.

Night Latches

Latches are mounted with screws onto the inside of the door. You lock them with a key from the outside and from the inside you can lock them by turning the thumb turn. Many people have these installed on their front doors as it offers extra security and because it is easy to install. Latches also come with different cylinder models.

Lever rim locks

This lock is similar to the night latch in that it is also mounted on the inside of the door, although it has a different locking mechanism than night latches. The deadbolt is locked by a key from both sides of the door. The locking mechanism is either 2 or 3 lever warded, with door knobs used on either side of the lock.

Cylinder locks

A cylinder lock is a much more compact lock in comparison to the others. You will notice that it only consists of a cylinder and a key with a thumb lock. This is how a cylinder lock works. When opening a door the key is inserted into the cylinder, the key turns the cylinder and the cylinder turns the cam which then pulls in the bolt and the door is opened. When wanting to lock the door you need to do the same procedure but in an opposite direction. Cylinder locks are mostly found in public places such as public toilettes.

These are some of the basic types of door locks which you can find on the market. Have a look through your local hardware store or locksmith shop and speak to your local locksmith about which door locks are best for your doors.
