Bedford Hospitals Charity has a new addition
I have been working as a nurse at the Bedford Hospital at the Primrose Unit for many years and I enjoyed every minute there. I find my job very rewarding, as I go home feeling great and knowing that I have helped someone to see another day.
As our unit is used mainly by outpatients, so the Bedford Hospitals Charity started a scheme in January 2006, in which they would provide a car for patients to travel from hospital to hospital. Since the scheme started over 8000 patient journeys have been made which covered more than 400,000 miles.
The Bedford Hospitals Charity currently has the three Vauxhall Zafiras that are being used to take patients to Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge for treatment every day, and now Bedford has taken delivery of a new Vauxhall Zafira which will join the other cars for its rewarding duty.
The keys to the people carrier were handed over to Gordon Beedon and Stephanie Wilson, two of the 28-strong volunteer driver’s team of the Charity, who provide free transport service to patients of the Macmillan Primrose Unit at Bedford Hospital, reducing the time away from home for daily treatments.
Cherie Denton, Vauxhall’s Community Officer, said: “The Vauxhall Zafira is ideal as the patients are able to get in and out of the vehicle with ease and the extra room permits either family members to travel with them or wheelchair storage if needed. We have been providing the Charity with vehicles for the past 5 years.”
